Our Second Grade Wax Museum

Conducting research, using multiple sources, presenting information orally and biographies are all important second grade concepts identified either by the new Common Core Standards or Ohio's new Social Studies Standards.  To teach these concepts in my classroom, I started by bringing in a wide variety of biographies at roughly a second grade reading level from my local library.  My students had a lot of fun choosing a person to learn more about.

I gave the class a week to read the book and complete a basic biography book report on what they read.  The following week, we went to the computer lab where each student used information from an electronic source to complete a "website review" of 3 new facts they learned about their person (most were able to use the encyclopedia found on Yahoo Kids).  After finishing our initial research, each student used their information to write a brief speech as though they were the person that they studied.  As a culminating activity, we dressed like that person and hosted a "wax museum."  Parents and other students were invited to come "push our buttons" and learn more about the life of a famous person.

While teaching children this young how to conduct research is challenging, I am very proud of the end result.  The class did a great job and it was some of the best oral reading and writing I have seen my students do all year.  In my second year as a primary grades teacher, I have been surprised at the passion children have for nonfiction.  They were so excited to read to gain new information and their passion for learning has been evident in their work.

Thank You Secret Pal!

I would just like to say a very special "thank you" to my secret pal who had this beautiful purple cake waiting for me on my desk Friday morning in honor of my half birthday.  Each staff member at Solomon has a family that sponsors them as their secret pal.  Secret Pals leave special treats for us throughout the year.  We have such wonderful and caring parents and students and this was such a fun surprise for my whole class.  Needless to say, they were very eager to help me eat this tasty snack. I have truly enjoyed all of my fun surprises this year, many of them in my favorite color purple.  It is truly a blessing to work with people who truly appreciate and support what we do to educate kids!

Solomon Lutheran 2nd Grade: The Ten Commandments

I am so proud of my class and the wonderful job they did leading the worship service on Wednesday! These young people read about the Ten Commandments and then acted them out in their own words. This class is a great example of what can be accomplished with teamwork and a positive attitude. Well done second graders!

Happy Birthday Solomon!

Last Friday, our school celebrated its 150th birthday.  We are now the oldest continually running Lutheran elementary school in the United States.  What an amazing accomplishment!  I can't take credit for the work, but I wanted to post some pictures of  our hallway decorations to celebrate this momentous occassion.  The snowmen were made by our third and fourth graders.

I had the idea of making a cake but knew I wasn't crafty enough to pull it off.  Mrs. Schultze and Mrs. Lemay did a fantastic job of making the idea come to life!  Each of the 150 candles were personalized by our staff and students.  Happy birthday Solomon and way to go Crusaders!
